Libby the chi has had three anal gland infections since I adopted her in Feb 2013. Its always the right side. This time , I couldnt get to see my usual vet and the one I saw suggested removing it .
Domino had a problem with loose stools when i got him and his anal glands werent emptying especially the right side funnily enough! and his became infected but only the once. The vet recommended i keep a check on them and empty them if required. Hes been fine since by doing this and a change in diet.
Libby has james welbeloved kibble and one meal of wet food and her stools are quite firm . I will see if there is anything I can add to her diet to help .
One bit of advice I always give out is something my vet advised me to do from when Scrumpy was much younger and had a problem with his glands. I still do it to this day, and he hasn't had a problem since (which doesn't make this a 100% proven technique, but if he gets a bit "fishy", this will normally sort it out)
Whenever I give him a bath, I always wash his bottom with my hand completely flat, and I rub it quite firmly. Apparently, this helps the glands to express and stop them from getting blocked, which is particularly good for him because in all the years I've had him he's never had a classic firm poo!
