I love hearing about how dogs and their owners found each other. Did you get your furry friend as a puppy? Rescued as an older dog?
So, with Scrumpy Jack we bought him from a breeder. I did a lot of research beforehand - what breed I wanted, what that breed was like in terms of needs (grooming, walking, energy etc) and what to look for in a breeder. The breeder we went for was recommended by my then boyfriend's mother, but I researched them anyway and they looked very good. We went to visit the pups at 4 weeks, and Scrumpy Jack chose us that evening He was the second born, so confident but not too bossy, and he fell asleep on my chest They painted the tip of his tail with nail polish, and asked us if we had a name - he was called Scrumpy Jack from that day on. He came home with me on his 8week birthday, and has been my little man ever since!
I'm sure most of you know the story behind Sara! I have friends that work with animal rescue charities over in Bulgaria, Romania, etc, and they use FB to promote the animals they have waiting for homes. I share a lot of them on my FB, and it's great to see when they get new homes. They ran a campaign called Save the Silistra 12, and it was highlighting the plight of a group of dogs that were facing death if homes weren't found soon. Their rescue shelter was being taken from underneath them by local goverment, and if they didn't have a place to go they'd be returned to the street. We scrolled through the photos, and Sara caught Tim's eye because of her husky mix (Tim has always wanted a husky!) - I sent a tentative enquiry to see if she had a place, and shockingly she'd had no interest at all! That was it, we offered her a foster place - it wasn't ideal, because although we have a good size house, good sized garden with tall brick wall etc...we were both still living on the south coast but commuting to London for work. I explained all of this in the email, and even when they accepted us as a foster, I kept telling them that if another foster came up, or if someone wanted to adopt her, that she was to go there! But that never happened (my friend REALLY wanted her to come to us, lol!)
We bought a crate, we bought cheap collars, lead etc, everything was geared up for her being a temporary foster. The day we went to pick her up she'd just jumped a fence and gone wandering the day before! But as soon as she saw us, she was just sat waiting patiently....she seemed to know that she was coming home with us. For good. We popped her in the crate in the car, and as we drove away Tim looked at me and said "Yeah...she's not going anywhere"
