How many of you have a kitty first aid kit? Or a general first aid kit with extras for the cats?
What should you include?
Ours are aimed at dogs, but are also suitable for cats and contain: Rectal thermometer Ambulance bandages (gauze pads attached to bandage so you can tie it on and secure it) Tweezers Antihistamines Cohesive bandages (sticks to itself so no tape needed - fab for covering dressings) Saline
If we get a cat, we'll get smaller versions of dressing and pads to fit teeny paws and bodies better.
I don't have a first aid kit as such but a drawer full of items that may come in useful in an emergency. I have new born baby socks and cohesive bandages in case of paw/leg injuries. I have fabric cone collars so they never have to wear the PLASTIC CONE, I have sleeves and legs from leggings to make made to measure bodysuits which my girls have worn after spay operations. I have Rescue Remedy for shock. Plastic syringes in case they need some fluids. I could go on and on. I haven't needed a thermometer as I can always tell my cats have a temperature which is quite amusing when we go to the Vet - I say for instance 'Evie has a temperature and a sore throat' and Martin the Vet will take her temperature and say 'Her temperature is a little high' and then look at her throat and say 'Her throat seems red and inflamed'. He has a very dry humour
Do the cats keep the socks on fairly willingly? We had a nightmare with Sara when she hurt her paw, hence the layers and layers of bandages! I like the idea of the fabric cone, you can also get inflatable collars that do the same job - plastic cones look so uncomfortable, and give Scrumpy Jack nasty rashes on his chin.
It's a long time since any of my cats had a paw injury - in the end she needed to have her toe amputated as the bone had broken and it kept getting re-infected as her body was treating the broken bone as a foreign body. She was fine with her dressing as the cohesive bandage kept it in place nicely. No one has had to wear the fabric cone as yet - it's just in case of emergency - I think if they did need to wear one I would get one of the inflatable ones - whether they would stay on a Devon is debatable as they have very tiny heads and bendy bodies.
