Hi Guys i was just wondering what you guys thought about puppy scanning? Ive had 1 litter in the past purely for the fact i wanted a boy to go with skye. So my moms husky minx we bred with a stud (did all the checks etc to make sure all was above board and safe) At the time we were interested to find out how many pups she had and the VET did a really basic scan to tell us there was definitely 4 but probably 1 or 2 more. Minx ended up having 2 boys (1 of which was diesel) and 5 girls. All stunning beautiful pups. The puppy scanning seems to be getting more and more popular and i just wondered if anyone else had had a litter or used a puppy scanner?
Heres a pic of the litter. over 2 years ago now.

I think that it is a bit hit or miss..from the tales I have heard..not as accurate as it might be, in which case it could be an anxious time during delivery when you are perhaps expecting 5 pups and she may have 7...My own girl was very tired after delivering her pups, it was only because I gave her a really good examination that I knew she still had one more to go, as it happens she really struggled to deliver the last and it took a while longer than the rest. (delivery was always an hour apart ) There must be occasions when the scan is correct too tho' and that is obviously piece of mind. Speak to your vet and find out more?
Beautiful pups Mike!
these were our 14 little nippers... still in touch with most of them.

she had a litter of 11 three years before, I had her checked by a vet for her last litter and he said not expect her to be quite so fertile! so 14 was a bit of a shock..she hasn't got 14 teats, I had powdered milk and bottles ready but instead I took a month off work and between us we just went round the clock, I believe in them having the run of the house and toys and just rolled up my carpets and had fun! before they left they were following me outside and in the fields...I had so much fun...most of the owners are in touch and all use my f/b page..i went and got one of them back that I felt was not being cared for as well I hoped.. they asked for behaviour help ... but when I went to help she asked if I would take him back, so I did and he went straight to the next person on the waiting list..after a play with his mum dad and brother! one works for the kc as an obedience demonstrator, one went off to WM police dog Squad, a lot went further north for companion gundog work, and the rest as companion dogs. Hard work and not profitable ...cost me more than I could ever have made, cos I looked after them as my own pets, and had two vet checks etc each..wormed, weaned, vaccinated ...two months off work..very very hard to let them go, Cupes got to stay, he is now almost 2 and a half now.

Scrumpy was the second born from a litter of 8, not sure where that sits in litter sizes for westies. Sara was from a litter of 6...she's the only one from her siblings and mum who survived

It was exactly the same with my litter and we refused some people as they wanted the huskies as "guard dogs" which is not in there nature at all so i refused to let them have them. They were fantastic pups and we spent more on then that what we sold them for but we made sure all went to good homes as far as we could tell.
Brilliant litter.

... Its a wonderful experience to go through in life, I felt very honoured that my girl allowed me to sleep in with the pups while she had my bed some nights, she needed the sleep and it allowed her some time off..i would take them all out into the fields and her head would be scanning the skies for crows and buzzards etc..she was brilliant, as they started to leave for their new homes our hous efelt empty ..I remember getting down to the last 7 and thinking 'this is a breeze' so tempting to keep more than one, but in my work I know that that can be huge trouble for the future, you cant choose one, its impossible, they are like your own children. We did decide upon a little girl, called her 'nelly' - I was short for Chanel (cos she was number 5!) but then we hadn't accounted for an unexpected call from a lady in the borders who had previously lost her b/w springer and was desparately seeking a little girl...She came up and stayed all day, played with all the pups and helped me feed them etc..She needed Nelly more than I did, and I should have been watching My girl because when I started to - I could see that she already had her favourite, and that's how we kept Cupes.

Loved reading this thread and hearing about your little treasures. I dont think I would have been able to part with any pups if Jordan had a litter. Never had the pleasure of having tiny puppies to look after, just Bailey 9weeks old for a week, had my hands full with him so can't imagine what it must have been like with 14!
I would love to watch a litter being born and raise some puppies, but I sadly don't have the ability to take time off work
I took videos on my phone as much as i could but i was in with Minx helping her deliver the pups. I will try and see if i can find any and if i can upload them somewhere.
