Well boy am I glad this week is nearly over.
I think I am going for a record of the most vet trips in one week!!
Monday was a usual busy day for me but nothing major happened. I have a lovely dippy Visla boy called Gabe staying for 4 weeks while his owner is away on business. Gabe usually comes here for day care 2 days a week so is a regular and is no trouble.
On Tuesday I was out walking him and noticed a lump on his back which was very obvious and I knew it hadn't been there Monday. It looked very much boil like but was also a little bit too ugly and purple looking and I wasn't happy about it so I made a appointment with his vet (who is also my vets). I left a message for his owner to call me who did and after talking to him, I knew I'd done the right thing as he was happy for me to get it checked asap.
So Tuesdays vet trip was Gabe (I took Bailey to keep him company, the receptionist love them both and they got loads of fuss) and his lump which turned out to be either a abscess (although it had no obvious head on it so the vet agreed that it wasn't likely) or a benign tumour which is very common in young dogs - Bailey had it when he was younger. It is called a canine cutaneous histiocytoma. While the idea of cancer is very scary, this is a very common tumour which usually, if left alone, will not cause the dog any problems and will regress and disappear within a few months. The only time they are a problem is if they get aggravated, such as the dog scratches it and caused it to bleed. It could be removed if needed.
So I had to phone the owner and explain this, I was at least able to speak from experience as have dealt with this before.
On Wednesday I had a call from one of my owners who's dog has eaten some carpet and needed to be taken in to the vet at 6pm. About 9 months ago, he had 2 metres of carpet removed from his gut and nearly died, so it was a 'oh no, here we go again' type situation. This owner doesn't drive so any vet trips require me to pick up and take him in the van. He had been sick and not eaten but the vets were hopeful this time the carpet might just pass through so they gave him an injection to stop him being sick. So he went home again with the owners keeping him under close observation.
I got a call in the middle of the night saying he had continued being sick every hour of so and she had spoken to the vets again and they wanted to see him first thing!
So on Thursday, off I went again to the vets - same vet practice, same receptionists on the desk every time - This time they were more concerned with Rex so he stayed in and was operated on to remove the blockage. If all went well, they would probably let him go home that night. So I was on standby most of the day incase he needed taking home.
At this point, I was texting friends and joking that I should change my address and just go and live at my vets!
NEVER MAKE JOKE ABOUT VETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Friday morning I woke up and Bailey had wet the bed!!!
Bailey is very clean, only 7 years old and has only ever had accidents in the house about 3 times in the whole time we had him, including when he was a pup!! Obviously I was very worried about him. Hoped it was something as simple as a bladder infection, but was really panicking, thinking he become incontinent because of spine damage, would suddenly go down hill. I had lots of thoughts going through my head of serious, complicated illnesses and conditions. To make things worse, I had a girl joining me for the day and had a really busy day.
In fact, every day had been busy, I had had to fit all vet trips around everything else!
When I phoned to make the appointment the receptionist and me were both laughing, I did say, I will never make jokes again!!
I had to make a choice between getting Bailey in to the vets in the morning and seeing a vet who didn't really know me and him or my own vet seeing him, but later in the day. I opted for him to see the vet who knows us really, really well as I trusted his opinion far more. I also took in a urine sample as pointless hoping he has a urine infection and not taking a sample, as you'd just have to go back again!
Well, they tested the urine, said there was a little blood which was consistant with an infection. The concentration was fine which was a good sign (he had been drinking a lot). So he is now on a high dose of antibiotics for a week and should be fine.
When I was on my way, Rexs owner rang to see if i could take him home but i wasn't able to so one of the vets took him home that night.
But, they wanted to see him for a check up sat morning. so off I went again!!!!!!!
This time, when I walked in the receptionist just asked if I wanted a job, they said they had set up a bed in the back for me as well
Today, touch wood, nothing has ghappened, but they want to see Rex again Monday evening so off i'll trot again!!
So that was Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday.
Glad this week is over!
Oh, and Gabes 'tumuor' errupted on thursday, so turned out was an absess after all!!!!!
