Hi everyone.
I just wondered there is so many foods available for dogs what everyone used to feed there doggies?? I have a mixture of biscuits and chicken for my huskies with the odd bit of fish here and there.
Also a little goats milk which is great for there coats.
Kind regards Mike

I use a staple of wagg, then they get fresh chicken, beef, fish, liver ..veggies, fruit ..quite a lot really, they get milk, cows milk..fortunately mine seem to be amongst the 20% or so of dogs that are not lactose intolerant. they get a lot of training food treats.. they do seem to prefer the food to be cooked except the fruit. bit of a homemade diet really...I always have wagg bags in ,,but no panic if I run out..will just cook up mince, veggies and rice or similar.

Yeah each dog is different. My huskies are not greedy dogs at all and in general you never see an overweight husky its just not in there breed to over eat. But what they tend to do is eat none stop for a few days then not touch anything for a few days. Its just how they are. Ive used James Wellbeloved too quiet a lot and purina pro plan.

OK guys as you must all know by now Xena is only 16wks old and I have been feeding her on pedigree puppy food along with bakers complete puppy food ,slowly introducing some raw veg which she loves especially a carrot, would love some advice on this as I truly don't like the idea of keeping her on this diet feel it makes her far too hyper, but I also have to watch my budget too,I want the best for her obviously,I also feel that she came away from her mum at an early age and I worry about the calcium side as in lack of milk??? but then maybe I am being too concerned.Anyfeed back would be appreciated.Marykay
What's your budget, Marykay? And are you thinking of feeding dry, wet or a combo of both? There are some much better quality foods out there, and hopefully we can help you find one that's within your price range.
We've tried Barking Heads, Fishmongers and Arden Grange, which are all in the £6-£8 range for a 2kg bag. All apart from the Arden Grange I'd recommend (but Sparks would, so it's very much on a dog by dog basis, Sara is naturally lean and doesn't take much for her to drop weight) Is this kind of price what you were thinking? The ingredients have all passed my inspection! A bag lasts about a week and a half, feeding a 20kg dog once a day.
I agree that I wouldn't want to keep her on Pedigree either, we know of a couple who had a dog nearly PTS because they were so hyper, and after switching them off of Pedigree onto a better quality food, their personality changed completely!
Thanks for the prompt reply Kimmikins, well I will give Xena as much as I can afford and your looking at between £10/15 per wk and thats a good limit for me,I have always fed my other dogs good old chappie chicken and rice along with just some complete and just biscuit meal they have all lived many years, but times have changed and dog diets have improved somewhat,I also am now buying lots of treats at a pound a pack, were going through those like no tomorrow as Xena is very much that kind of pup but it works, nervous about giving her the kitchen scraps as she is a bit young I feel but they will come into her diet at some point in the near future.Have told all and sundry not to feed her people type biscuits/chocolate or anything else as I do not want a scrounging dog thats sits in front of you while your eating and having other friends round too, that for me is a complete NO NO!! and so far she does not do that.Marykay
Bakers is crap . Some own brands are better and dont have colourants and additives and are cheaper than brands such as burns and JWB. I don't know enough to advise on a puppy diet. i expect a good puppy diet would have enough calcium in it . You'll have to do some leg work and take a note of all the ingrediants in each brand and compare them to see which is best and which you can afford .
I need to watch Pips weight so burns would be ok for him.
The thing that gets me with Bakers is that it's made by Purina...who make a much better quality food, so know how to do it! Sure they can make a cheaper food, nothing wrong with that, but why use such horrible ingredients and additives?

Marykay It is crazy that they do put all the additives etc in bakers but its also one of the most well known dogs foods because of the money they spend on the adverts they produce. One of the first things to look for is make sure that the biscuits dont have any different colours in them its a good basic guide to see theres not loads of additives. Then you can dig a little deeper by checking the packets. JWB is a good food. I had mine on BETA when they were pups and they got on just fine.
